Inspecting for Emerald Ash Borer

1/6/2019

Emerald Ash Borer on a Penny for Scale
The emerald ash borer was first discovered in the U.S. in 2002. It is a very hostile pest that feeds on wood. Having your tree maintained and inspected may help your tree fight the emerald ash borer infestation. You should inspect your trees and look for signs of infestation. Here are some ways you can do to prevent and treat the infestation.

The Signs

There are some tell-tale signs of the presence of the emerald ash borer in your tree. Your tree professional may notice these signs:
  • Dead branches, especially the ones on top
  • Leafy shoots growing from trunks or roots
  • Limped, thin or yellow foliage
  • Splits in bark showing a dense gathering of larva
  • D-shaped exit holes
  • A lot of woodpecker in the area

If you see any of these signs, you should not wait long before you talk to a professional tree care service. Emerald ash borer can cause a tree it infested to die in three to five years of infestation.

Treatment and Prevention

Luckily, there are available pesticides that can treat and prevent the emerald ash borer from inspecting your tree. It can be applied annually to ensure bugs will not affect their ash trees. It can be very helpful if you have your tree inspected by the professional. By doing so, emerald ash borer can be prevented and treated early.

Spreading

Emerald ash borer may spread through firewood. Unfortunately, a big part of North Carolina has been impacted by this pest; the state cannot be put in quarantine. Homeowners should be careful with transferring and traveling firewood and other kinds of wood products across different states and county. If infected firewood is moved to a new area, bugs will have an opportunity to spread from the firewood.
