Winter Tree Trimming
The winter season is a great time for many things. After Winston-Salem's hot and humid summer, followed by a beautiful yet brief autumn, when winter approaches, all we want are warms evenings by the fire with a hot toddy. While we like a little snow, sunny days with moderate temperatures are always pleasant during a season of cold weather. The winter season is great for completing a number of outside projects and yard work. One of these winter opportunities is to trim your trees.
Why You Need to Trim Your Trees

Trimming a tree keeps it strong and healthy. In cutting away troublesome and dead limbs, you allow more space for the tree to grow and for the main branches to better support its structure. Tree trimming aids in healthy, strong growth by focusing energy on the main branches. Further, trimming helps trees withstand strong storms by reducing air friction and the potential for ice damage. Ice can wreak havoc on trees, especially ones that haven't been trimmed often. Landscape trees can quickly become overgrown creating too much weight for its structure to support. Remember, landscape trees differ from forest trees that can generally only grow up as they compete for sunlight. Conversely, trees in your yard can grow in every direction, quickly creating an issue if not regularly trimmed. Lastly, regular trimming helps maintain the natural shape of the tree providing more aesthetic beauty in your landscape. While trimming can be done at any time of the year, winter is by far the best season to minimize any potential risk to the tree.

- Better for the Tree - as winter approaches, most trees go into a dormant stage and are better able to sustain trimming. Specifically, sap flow in a tree will be minimal in the winter allowing for the cut wound to heal quickly and without risk of insect infestation. Further, without leaves, the tree exposes itself to trimming much better than when it is in full foliage.
- Better for You - again, it will be much easier for you after all the leaves have fallen to see what limbs are dead, need to be trimmed, and should be left intact. Also, the ground is hard and most landscape plantings are dormant, so any damage to anything nearby is minimized. Lastly, you can easily prune small limbs and branches with shears or a handsaw. However, most property owners should never attempt to remove larger limbs that require you to climb the tree (even with a ladder) as they are difficult to cut at heights and can't no easily be lowered safely to the ground.
- Promotes Grow in the Spring - in cutting off unhealthy and dead branches, trees have more space to grow strong and healthy. Trimming trees actually promotes more and better growth by focusing the plant's energy in the branches not cut. As spring warms the ground the gets trees' sap flowing, a well-trimmed tree will be primed for excellent growth.
